Basils are important culinary herbs, they are used in cooking to add spicy
flavour to pesto sauce and a large number of dishes. Dried leaves can be used for
potpourri and for scented sachets. Infuse fresh leaves as a tea to aid digestion. Most basils are annuals.
- Spice - Ocimum basilicum
Strong spicy fragrance and flavour. Sacred Hindu variety. Use in tomato dishes, salads and pesto sauce.
The fresh leaves keep their flavour if preserved in oil or vinegar.
- Lemon - Ocimum americanum
Fragrant annual, small bush. Ideal for potpourri or as a herbal tea. Can be used in many recipes
which call for a lemon flavour, and it has a slight aftertaste resembling lemon balm.
- Thai - Ocimum basilicum Thai Siam Queen
Nice contrast between the deep burgundy (red-purple) flowers and bright green leaves.
Basil-liquorice flavour. Easy to grow and attractive shrub. Great for adding a spicy flavour to a curry.
